I made use of impasto and sand to create a rough texture on top of which, through the way I was working, appeared this huge figure – or thick cloud of lots of figures – flying, stretched out across the land. It – or they – appeared to me as being like a locust – its shape and movement. I worked to create a sense of that and the thrumming in the air.
